“Sometimes the term ‘industry legend’ is overused... But in the case of Peter Main, it is perfectly appropriate. Many common industry practices were literally invented by Peter over the last 15 years, and we would not have achieved our phenomenal success without him.” - Minoru Arakawa, NOA President

Peter Main, Nintendo of America's long time Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, will soon be stepping down from his position at NOA. Main's retirement, effective January 31, 2002, will mark the end of 15 incredible years with the company. Main joined Nintendo as VP of Marketing in April of 1987. In his time with Nintendo, Main helped choreograph the US launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy, saw the company through FTC investigations and patent infringement suits, pioneered incredibly successful marketing efforts, and brought North American success to Nintendo Co. Ltd. Of Main's many honors, he was named Marketer of the Year by Adweek Magazine and Corporate Marketer of the Year by the Delaney Report. His retirement from Nintendo will be a great loss for the company.

Current President of Nintendo of Canada, Peter MacDougall, will assume Main's position. MacDougall has been with Nintendo of Canada for 12 years and formerly held positions at Gillette and Seagrams. The following is the official press release from Nintendo of America.

Peter Main to Retire Early 2002

Peter MacDougall to Run Nintendo of America Sales and Marketing Effective Feb.1, 2001 Redmond, Wash., July 18, 2001 – Nintendo of America Inc. today announced that Peter MacDougall, current president of Nintendo of Canada, will become executive vice president, sales and marketing for Nintendo of America, effective Feb. 1, 2002. MacDougall will replace longtime NOA executive Peter Main, who has announced his retirement effective Jan. 31, 2002.

MacDougall joined Nintendo of Canada in 1989 and has overseen its explosive growth. In his new position, MacDougall will bring extensive knowledge of global marketing stemming from international postings at Nintendo, Gillette and Seagrams.

“Peter’s unique qualifications make him ideally suited for this job,” says Minoru Arakawa, president, Nintendo of America Inc. “His breadth of success is a distinct asset given the global nature of Nintendo’s business.”

Main will retire in January 2002 after 15 years at Nintendo. He joined Nintendo as vice president of marketing in April 1987, and among his many honors was named Marketer of the Year by Adweek Magazine and Corporate Marketer of the Year by the Delaney Report.

“Sometimes the term ‘industry legend’ is overused,” adds Arakawa. “But in the case of Peter Main, it is perfectly appropriate. Many common industry practices were literally invented by Peter over the last 15 years, and we would not have achieved our phenomenal success without him.”

Having read extensively of Peter Main's contributions to Nintendo and the pleasure to discuss the industry with him at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, I can say with confidence he's one of the kindest, most honest, and shrewd Nintendo executives ever. Peter Main will surely be missed.
