"May 3 2002 - It's Official" - Nintendo of Europe proudly announced the official European launch date for the Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo will ship 500,000 units in to Europe for day one and a total of 1,000,000 units for the launch period.

GameCube will come to market with a price tag of €199 or approximately $178/£129. This would give GameCube a MSRP roughly 30% less than that of Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 2. Software is expected to be priced at around €60.

With more than twenty titles available on day one, the European GameCube launch stands to see the strongest lineup of any new platform release in history. Nintendo will contribute two exclusive first-party games, Luigi's Mansion and WaveRace: Blue Storm. They will be complemented by an outstanding selection of third-party titles - a number of which are also GameCube-exclusive. The following is a list of games currently planned for release at launch...

Batman Vengeance
ISS 2

Burnout
Luigi's Mansion

Cel Damage
NHL Hitz

Crazy Taxi
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX
Spiderman

Donald Duck Quack Attack
Star Wars Rogue Leader

ESPN Winter Sports
Super Monkey Ball

Extreme G: XG3
Tarzan Freeride

FIFA 2002 World Cup
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3

Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Wave Race: Blue Storm

Shortly after launch, Nintendo will release Super Smash Bros. Melee and NBA Courtside 2002 on May 24th. Its popularity already proven, Super Smash Bros. Melee has won high acclaim from the gaming media and sold 1,000,000 copies in Japan during only nine weeks of release. Following closely behind will be top-notch system exclusives including Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Pikmin, Star Fox Adventures, and Capcom's Resident Evil. Nintendo anticipates nearly fifty titles to be available for the GameCube by the summer.

The Nintendo GameCube will be available across Europe both purple and black. Controllers will be available in purple, black, and clear/purple. Nintendo intends to support the launch with a
100,000,000 integrated marketing campaign.

On the issue of demographics, David Gosen, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing at Nintendo of Europe comments, "GameCube will not be targeting kids, will not be targeting teens and will not be targeting adults. GameCube will appeal to anyone who enjoys being entertained by interactive gaming. We believe gaming is an attitude - not an age. With family-friendly, sports, racing, adventure, extreme sports, and action games available from day one, GameCube is dedicated to good gameplay... all players, all ages, all genres."

In summary of the coming launch, Gosen states, "The GameCube delivers great gameplay for all players, all ages and all genres - all at a winning price. Without a doubt, 2002 will be the year of the Cube."
